Past Versions
Abbreviated descriptions of what changed from version to version of FarmBot Genesis
It's getting better all the time
FarmBot Genesis is always being improved and has undergone many iterations. We encourage skimming through the older versions to understand how we arrived at the latest design.
Genesis v1.6
View the FarmBot Genesis v1.6 documentation.
Major changes
- Introduced the Rotary Tool - a weed whacker style tool powered by a 24V DC motor and designed to help abate weeds, drill holes for seeding, or even perform light milling of the soil surface.
- Introduced a new version of the Farmduino, featuring an H-bridge with load detection for controlling the rotary tool’s motor in forward and reverse and detecting stalls. The new board also featured new 2.54mm pitch connectors for the solenoid valve, LED strip, vacuum pump, and peripherals 4 and 5. The board includes additional EMI protection provisions, including a new
PE
grounding plane andPE
connections for the vacuum pump and UTM. And finally, the new board increases theUSB OUT
voltage that supplies the Raspberry Pi to mitigate low voltage issues. - Introduced a new version of the vacuum pump, featuring a circuit board directly soldered onto the back of the motor to reduce EMI startup current draw. The new pump also features a 3-pin, 2.54mm pitch connector with
PE
grounding. Thank you Chris from Réstep for open-sourcing your design! - Introduced a modularized, two-piece UTM cable with a 12-pin 90-degree waterproof screw-together connector at the junction between the Y and Z axis cable carriers. Additionally, the new cables are shielded, with the shielding shunted to UTM pin and UTM cable wire
L
. - Switched to smaller
15mm x 20mm
internal dimension cable carrier for the x-axis, along with new cable carrier supports and a new mount. - Began pre-assembling all of the FarmBot tools (the Watering Nozzle, Seeder, Weeder, Soil Sensor, and new Rotary Tool) to reduce the burden of FarmBot assembly required by the end user.
- Starting with the second production run, upgraded from the Raspberry Pi model 3B+ to model 4B.
Minor changes
- Included a new 7.5A fuse for the Farmduino.
- Switched to a slightly smaller power supply and a new 3-core cable to provide
PE
grounding. - Due to the cancellation of the product, removed FarmBot Genesis MAX from the documentation.
- Switched to shielded USB 2.0 cable (
28AWG/1p + 24AWG/2c
) for the camera cable to reduce the potential for interference. - Shortened the X1 motor cable and X1 encoder cable slightly.
- Removed unnecessary features from the leadscrew block design.
- Removed the 5.5mm wrench, 2.5mm hex key, bladed screwdriver and phillips screwdriver from the kit.
- Updated some part quantities to reduce the number of extra pieces at the end of assembly.
- Added numerous documented QA checks to our manufacturing processes.
- Made improvements to the sustainability of packaging materials.
- Replaced the three 1-slot toolbays in XL kits with an additional 3-slot toolbay.
- Replaced the 22 gauge luer lock needles with additional 16 and 19 gauge needles.
- Removed the wide weeder blades from the kit.

Genesis v1.5
View the FarmBot Genesis v1.5 documentation.
Major changes
- Introduced FarmBot Genesis MAX v1.5, covering an area 3m wide and 18m in length (3x larger than XL and 12x larger than the smallest size). Due to low demand, this model was later cancelled.
- Introduced a new version of the Farmduino, featuring integrated Trinamic TMC2130 stepper drivers that are controlled with a SPI interface. The new drivers deliver more current to the motors, offer significantly quieter operation, and can be tuned via software. The new board also adds load detection circuitry to all of the peripherals.
- Introduced modularized cables and tubing with 90-degree connectors at the junction between the Y and Z axis cable carriers. This makes assembly and disassembly of the FarmBot much easier.
- Switched to using nut bars and flange locknuts throughout the majority of the FarmBot allowing for faster and more robust assembly and a significantly reduced part count. Many of the plate hole layouts were simplified to accommodate nut bars.
- Improved the vacuum pump and solenoid valve mounts to be plastic injection molded parts to reduce weight, vibration, and aid with cable management.
- Decreased the size of the x-axis cable carrier to 15mm x 30mm internal size to save weight and reduce friction when moving in the X direction.
- Added a real-time clock to the Pi Adapter Board, improving FarmBot’s ability to operate in offline/off-grid environments.
- Added a temperature sensor to the soil sensor PCB.
- Added a seed trough holder and seed troughs to the kit to improve seeding times.
Minor changes
- Extrusions are now sandblasted before being clear anodized.
- Added an inline air filter to the vacuum system.
- Switched to a stainless steel, M5 threaded luer lock adapter.
- Improved the solenoid valve wire routing.
- Switched from including camera calibration objects to a camera calibration card.
- Added a recessed lip to the z-axis motor mount.
- Combined the garden hose adapter and barbed adapter into one component.
- Began packing motors independently of the cables.
- Switched to shielded USB 2.0 cable for the camera cables to reduce interference.
- Upgraded the Raspberry Pi Model 3B to the 3B+.
- Sourced an improved Pi power cable to reduce voltage drop.
- Removed the standoffs beneath the electronics boards.
- Replaced the dowel pins with long nut bars.
- Added laser engraved labels to the barbed adapters.
- Frosted the FarmBot logo on the electronics box lid.
